About Immunogenetics

The Division of Immunogenetics is headed by Dr. Massimo Trucco, Hillman Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Trucco and his laboratory colleagues have pioneered studies of the relationship of the genetically determined substances responsible for tissue “matching” (necessary, for example, for successful transplantation) to the occurrence of diabetes mellitus in children. These studies, initiated as a means of defining the molecular reasons for diabetes, have immense implications for improving our ability to transplant tissues such as bone marrow from one person to another. Dr. Trucco is a world leader in the emerging field of immunogenetics – a role that has resulted in extension of his laboratory studies to his federally funded and clinically essential national bone marrow repository. Dr. Trucco has been named as the Director of a newly instituted Diabetes Research Institute at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, and his talented leadership virtually ensures dramatic success in improving the clinical care of childhood diabetes.
