Autism Center

Description of Services

The Autism Center serves young children who have or are suspected of having an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or related disorders.

The center is a component of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC's Child Development Unit. Services available through the Autism Center and the Child Development Unit include:

Assessments

  • physical exam and comprehensive medical history with an emphasis on function and development
  • screening tests, lab tests, and diagnostic procedures
  • family-centered plan of care
  • consultations with other health care providers, as needed

Referrals

  • additional medical evaluations may include audiology, neurology, gastroenterology, and genetics
  • speech and language therapy
  • physical and occupational therapy
  • nutritional counseling
  • early intervention wrap-around services and psychiatric services

Referral Requirements

Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patient’s visit. For accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
