Core Facilities
Vector Core
Islet Procurement Core
Cell and Tissue Imaging Core
Administrative Core
Vector Core
Director - Paul Robbins, PhD
This core will construct and provide viral vectors for each of the projects. The overall goal of the core is to develop and provide the most appropriate vectors for each project for long-term or regulated gene expression that could be used for clinical applications.
Islet Procurement Core
Director - Abdul Rao, PhD
This core will isolate and provide islets from animals and humans to each investigator on a weekly basis. The core also will isolate animal and human bone marrow for experiments.
Cell and Tissue Imaging Core
Director - Simon Watkins, PhD
This core will provide all the necessary imaging analysis of islets, as well as pathology of transplanted islets. Core investigators will be able to visualize numerous biological processes, including the efficiency of gene transfer to islets, as well as changes in gene expression.
Administrative Core
Director - Massimo Trucco, MD
Co-director - Joseph Glorioso, PhD
Co-director - Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD
This core will oversee the scientific development and operation of the Center, promote scientific interactions between investigators, provide a better understanding of the diabetes-related problems for the investigators new to the diabetes field and maintain continuously open lines of communication with the JDF. It will ensure that the intellectual and scientific value of the Center is greater than the sum of its parts, and that the Center is cost effective.
