Biography Summary

Demetrius Ellis, MD, emigrated from Greece to the United States at the age of 13. He began employment two days after his arrival in New York City and subsequently financed all of his living and educational expenses. His career truly exemplifies the realization of the American dream of becoming a pediatrician. His long-term and most enjoyable connection to Pittsburgh began with a brief period of residency at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh but given the opportunity to initiate a nephrology program he eagerly returned to Pittsburgh. In the old tradition, he taught students and residents, looked after all the children with diverse kidney disorders in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while also carrying out clinical and laboratory research. Although he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed studies in various prestigious journals as well as 28 book chapters, he is most proud of his personalized care of children with renal disorders and of his teaching awards.

His clinical expertise is particularly well regarded in the field of pediatric transplantation. As the clinical director of pediatric renal transplantation, Dr. Ellis provides the leadership to a multidisciplinary team approach to meeting the comprehensive needs of transplanted children and their families. His patients were the very first children with kidney transplants ever to receive cyclosporine or tacrolimus immunosuppression in 1981 and 1989 respectively. Particular research interests include physical growth after transplantation and posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease. Superior outcome results have distinguished Children's as perhaps the top renal transplant program in the world. Moreover, Dr. Ellis helped develop immunosuppression protocols, which led to unsurpassed body growth and other quality of life aspects which are unparalleled. Also, Dr. Ellis is the center principal investigator for the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study. Other research interests and career highlights include a very productive participation in a longitudinal NIH-sponsored study, currently in the 15th year, investigating the "Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications" in which he has performed the nephropathy evaluation. In addition, he has conducted multiple investigations in pediatric hypertension and proteinuric renal disorders.
