Epilepsy Sleep Study
Epilepsy, Executive Function and Sleep Problems in a Pediatric Population
Protocol Description
This study will examine how sleep and certain cognitive functions, called executive functions, are affected in epilepsy patients and similarly aged adolescents without epilepsy. Executive functions are thinking process involving concentration and planning. The results of this study will help clinicians assess sleep habits and cognitive function in children with and without epilepsy.
Eligibility Criteria
Researchers will work with patients of both genders, aged 10 to 17, who have epilepsy and an equal number who do not have epilepsy.
Boys: Ages 10 to 17
Girls: Ages 10 to 17
Requirements
Following screening, two visits are required. On the initial visit, participants will complete a questionnaire and be provided an actigraph, a device that will be worn on the wrist continuously for 10 days to measure sleep and wake cycles. On a return visit, each participant will be given several tests and the parent or guardian will complete questionnaires about the child’s behavior and sleep patterns.
