Eustachian Tube Function in a Pressure Chamber: Validation

Protocol Description

This study will compare Eustachian tube function testing in adults, using a pressure chamber when the eardrums are intact and using manometric methods after a small hole (myringotomy) is placed in the eardrum. The hole in the eardrum will heal by itself without treatment. Comparisons will be made between the results for the two types of tests.

Eligibility Criteria

For this validation study, researchers will only enroll adults, at least age 18, with normal middle-ear status.
Males: 18 and older
Females: 18 and older

Requirements
Participants will visit Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC on at least 6 occasions for Eustachian tube function tests – twice using a pressure chamber, once for myringotomy, twice using manometric methods and at least once for a follow-up visit. Examinations of the ear will be done at each visit. Hearing testing will be done at the third and at the final visits.
