Biography Summary

While directing the Pharmacy Department at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Jeff Goff, RPh, MS, also answers nearly all of the "Ask the Pharmacist" questions about medications, health problems, allergies and various other questions that are submitted via Children's Web site.

Mr. Goff receives questions from around the world including Australia, Europe and the Middle East, such as "What is the daily fluoride recommendation for my 3-year-old son?" Other questions are about much more serious matters (poisonings, diabetes and bleeding disorders), which are more challenging to correspond about via e-mail. "These questions keep reminding me of how desperate people are for information," he says. "It concerns me about the access to health care in some places in the world."

But in Pittsburgh, Mr. Goff pairs the collaborative resources of the hospital with his own expertise to respond within a day or two. As he answers these online questions, he also serves as director of the Pharmacy Department, which runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and dispenses more than a million doses per year.

His interest and understanding of the needs of medicine and treatments began at an early age. His mother is still a practicing nurse, and his own experience with childhood asthma helps him on the job even today. "You can't help but have a high sense of compassion for the children and their family who are living with devastating medical issues," he says.

A "career day" in high school also helped him establish an interest in the profession of pharmacy. "I always wanted to help people," Mr. Goff says. "Pharmacy gave me that opportunity, and working for the benefit of children makes it even more fulfilling."
Pharmacy turned out to be an excellent career choice for Mr. Goff because he lends his vast array of knowledge to help others. "It's a good feeling knowing that there's someone out there who really cares about your child's welfare," he says. "We care about kids all over the world even though we may only know them via e-mail."
