Biography Summary

Jan S. Grudziak, MD, PhD, was born and raised in Poland. He completed his pre-med undergraduate education, as well as medical graduate school, at the K. Marcinkowski University School of Medicine in Poznan, Poland. At the medical school he met his wife, Aleksandra. After completing a residency in orthopaedic surgery and trauma, he took a position equal to assistant professor at the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at his alma mater. His special interests included congenital hip and foot deformations, adolescent scoliosis, and adolescent and pediatric sports medicine. In 1991, he finished and defended his PhD thesis about genetic, demographic and treatment variables influencing the final treatment outcome of congenital clubfeet. His PhD thesis was ranked nationally by the Polish Ministry of Health as one of the best five PhD theses in Medical Sciences in the years 1991–1993.

After four years in academic practice in Poznan, Dr. Grudziak and his wife came to Pittsburgh to participate in research projects at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent four years at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as a member of the active provisional staff. In 1993 he passed all required medical exams in order to be licensed in the United States and, in 1994, he completed his Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Together with Dr. W. Timothy Ward, Dr. Grudziak has popularized a unique surgical approach to the treatment of the dysplastic hip—the Dega transiliac osteotomy—a method he learned and had used in Poland for the treatment of congenital hip dysplasia. The doctors’ videotape program, Dega’s Approach to the Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip, won an award at the 62nd Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and this operative technique has become one of the standard procedures in the treatment of the dysplastic hip. Pittsburgh’s experience with the Dega osteotomy will be published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Dr. Grudziak repeated his orthopaedic residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, making him board eligible by the standards of American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. In early July 2000, Dr. Grudziak rejoined the Pediatric Division of the Department of Orthopedics, University of Pittsburgh, as a faculty member.

Dr. Grudziak and his wife, herself a physician specializing in pediatrics, live in O’Hara Township. They have two daughters. In his free time, Dr. Grudziak enjoys extreme skiing, volleyball, soccer, tennis and improving his computer skills.
