Biography Summary
Daniel A. Kietz, MD, joined the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2003. Dr. Kietz is a highly skilled rheumatologist with a reputation for excellence in patient care. His interests have long focused on ways of providing comprehensive care and support to children with rheumatic diseases and their families so they are better able to realize their full potential. Dr. Kietz is board-certified in pediatric rheumatology, adult rheumatology, pediatrics and internal medicine. In addition to his clinical duties, he teaches at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he is an assistant professor of pediatrics.
Dr. Kietz studied medicine at Goethe-Universitaet and University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, earning his medical degree in 1991. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Arzt im Praktikum, Hofheim, Germany, before traveling to the United States for further medical training. Dr. Kietz completed a residency in pediatrics/medicine and his fellowship in pediatric and adult rheumatology at St. Louis University, Mo., where he was honored as Best Resident in Medicine/Pediatrics. He returned to Germany in 2002 to join Children's Hospital, University of Tuebingen, working in pediatric hematology, oncology, rheumatology and general pediatrics. Dr. Kietz joined Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh the following year as part of the hospital's efforts to expand its Division of Pediatric Rheumatology.
His career has been dedicated to providing high-quality patient care and educating the next generation of rheumatologists. Of particular interest to Dr. Kietz is integrating medical care and other supports to produce the best possible outcomes for children with rheumatic diseases and their families. This includes optimizing education, self-reliance, expertise and understanding, in addition to finding therapies that make patients as comfortable as possible, while minimizing the risk of adverse consequences due to disease and medications. As a teacher, Dr. Kietz was on the faculty at St. Louis University and the University of Tuebingen before joining the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Kietz is the author of articles on psychosocial aspects in pediatric rheumatology and on the use of etanercept in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which were published in leading medical journals. He is licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Germany.
