Nutrition for Children with Autism
Diet and Nutrition in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Autism Treatment Network Collaborative Study
Protocol Description
The purpose of this study is to learn more about food selectivity exhibited by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to understand how it affects their general health. The study will also explore other aspects of general health related to diet, including how children with ASD store nutrients like iron and vitamin D, which impact general health and may also affect sleep patterns. This information may improve identification of treatment options by contributing to the body of clinical knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
Children of both genders, ages 2 to 11 years, with an ASD who are also participants in the Autism Treatment Network.
Boys: 2 to 11 years old
Girls: 2 to 11 years old
Requirements
Parents of children selected for the study will record the meals and snacks that their child eats over a 3-day period in a food diary. A list of each child’s current medications and nutritional supplements will be collected with this record. Parents will also complete questionnaires regarding food-related behaviors displayed by participants, their food preferences, sleep habits and overall general behavior. A blood sample will also be requested for analysis, but is not required.
Visits: 2
