Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center

Description of Services

The Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center (PEMC) at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is dedicated to improving awareness and reducing environmental exposures that cause childhood disease and health issues. Through a multidisciplinary team of top pediatric experts, the center is studying how environmental exposures, such as secondhand smoke, molds, air pollution and other contaminants, impact the health of children in western Pennsylvania. Future efforts will be focused on developing preventive therapies.

The center's initial focus is on education related to the prevention and the appropriate treatment of asthma and its relationship to environmental exposures, targeting local communities where rates are disproportionately high.

Services offered by the PEMC include:

  • Educational programs and speaking opportunities
  • Prevention and intervention programs for parents and caregivers
  • Community outreach programs and screenings
  • Clinical research programs
  • Basic research to investigate the impact of environmental factors on children
  • Continuing Medical Education and training courses for healthcare providers
  • Advocacy to develop and promote environmental health policies that protect children

The center is generously funded by The Heinz Endowments.
