Pediatric Stroke Program
Description of Services
The Pediatric Stroke Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is a comprehensive program supported by the Division of Child Neurology for the diagnosis, education, treatment, and prognosis of children with stroke and their families.
The program offers a regularly scheduled stroke clinic coordinated by a pediatric neurologist with special expertise in stroke management. Close affiliations with the Children’s Rehabilitation Services and the Child Development Unit offer further comprehensive care and treatment options.
Each patient receives a thorough neurological evaluation with special imaging studies to determine the cause of his or her stroke and assist in diagnosis and treatment. Families are educated on treatment options and are given prognostic information.
In order to provide the most advanced care, the Stroke Program is involved in multi-institutional, national, and international studies. Each patient will have the opportunity to be enrolled in a patient registry, which allows him or her to be contacted in the future for research and educational opportunities.
Common stroke diagnoses include:
- newborn stroke
- arterial ischemic stroke
- cerebral venous thrombosis
- hemorrhagic stroke
Treatment options often include:
- medications to prevent blood clots or blood vessel inflammation
- surgery to increase blood flow to the brain
- physical, occupational, speech, and cognitive therapy
