Sleep Program for Children with Autism
Treatment of Sleep Disturbances in Young Children with Autism
Protocol Description
This study evaluates two approaches to helping parents deal with sleep problems in their young children with autism spectrum disorder: a Parent Training program (PT) and a Parent Education Program (PEP). PT sessions involve instruction in techniques designed to prevent or decrease sleep problems and promote positive bedtime behaviors whereas PEP sessions provide relevant educational information in an instructional setting. Researchers will determine which is more acceptable to parents and effective in decreasing sleeping problems.
Eligibility Criteria
Subject to certain eligibility requirements, this study is open to parents/guardians of boys and girls, ages 24 months through 60 months who have been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder and are displaying significant sleep problems.

Requirements
Before starting the study, children will be evaluated to determine whether the program is appropriate, in 2, 2-hour visits at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC’s Child Development Unit in Oakland. Participants will be randomly assigned for either PT or PEP. Each program consists of 5 sessions lasting 60 to 90 minutes, delivered individually (not in groups). A home visit by a member of the study team is also included. As part of the study, the children may be asked to periodically wear an actigraph, a small watch-like device that measures movement.
