Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has played an important role in the rapid progress of intestinal transplant techniques. Our surgeons have performed approximately 45 percent of intestinal transplants worldwide.

Intestine Program Highlights

  • In 2009, Children’s performed more than two times the number of intestinal transplants than the average pediatric transplant center.
  • Children’s has performed 236 intestine transplants since the program’s inception in 1990.
  • Children’s Hospital has the highest patient survival rates (76 percent at three years) compared with all other high-volume patient transplant centers nationwide.
