Spina Bifida Program
Description of Services
The Spina Bifida Program is a comprehensive, coordinated inpatient and outpatient service for children of all ages with neural tube birth defects and spinal cord disorders. The program provides team evaluation and periodic re-evaluation utilizing the disciplines of:
- Neurosurgery
- Physical therapy
- Orthopaedics
- Occupational therapy
- Urology
- Nursing
- Clinical social work
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Urologic testing, radiology services, developmental testing, bracing assessment and full diagnostic services (i.e., CT scan, evoked potentials and MRIs) are integral components of each child’s program. Nutrition consultations are available as needed. Emphasis is on communication between the spina bifida team at Children's Hospital, the child’s pediatrician and school and community service agencies.
Referral Requirements
All necessary referral and authorization forms required by insurance plans must be received before the patient's visit. For accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
Parent Support Group
The Parent Support Group of the Spina Bifida Association of Greater Pittsburgh is largely a parent-to-parent outreach organization whose purpose is to provide mutual supportive services to the families of children with spina bifida.
