Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Names New Chief Operating Officer

Christopher A. Gessner, VP of ambulatory services and president of CCP, named new COO

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh president and CEO Roger A. Oxendale announced today that Christopher A. Gessner will serve as the hospital's new chief operating officer (COO).

As COO, Gessner will oversee the day-to-day operations of the 265-bed hospital. He also will oversee implementation of the hospital's operating and capital budgets and execution of the hospital's strategic plan relative to operations, efficiency and clinical outcomes.

Gessner, 38, who currently serves as Children's vice president of ambulatory services and president of the Community Care Pediatrics (CCP) practices, has been at the hospital for five years.

"Chris is a very talented and driven individual. During his tenure, Chris has achieved numerous accomplishments for the betterment of the hospital and community, including the financial turnaround of the CCP operations," Oxendale said. "Chris has an outstanding background in strategic planning and business development and will bring new ideas and enthusiasm to this position. I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with Chris to continue to advance Children's as one of the leaders in pediatric health care."

Gessner will continue his role as president of CCP, which is the largest pediatric and adolescent primary care medical network in western Pennsylvania. Gessner oversaw 91 pediatricians in 25 locations across six counties.

In addition to overseeing all aspects of CCP, Gessner's areas of responsibility included the Department of Pediatrics, surgical practice plans, satellite ambulatory care/surgery centers and transplant services to name just a few. In addition, he led the facility planning for the ambulatory components of the new Children's building project, currently under way in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh.

Before coming to Children's in 2000, Gessner was the vice president of health services administration for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and served as the vice president of business development for Penn State Geisinger Health System.

"I'm honored to have this opportunity before me and am excited to accept a new set of responsibilities. I look forward to working side-by-side with Roger in an effort to continue to advance Children's as a premier pediatric institution," Gessner said. "Children's is a wonderful institution with a rich history and noble mission. I am grateful to be able to continue to work with such a talented and dedicated group of people."

Gessner makes his home in Pine Township with his wife, Jane, their two sons and a daughter.
