Cardiovascular Scientists Gather at Children's Hospital For American Heart Association Research Meeting
Pittsburgh, Pa. -
February 7, 2007
-
WHAT:
The American Heart Association (AHA) - Allegheny Division is sponsoring its 15th annual Fellows Research Day. This year's event is hosted by Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Fellows Research Day highlights cardiovascular research being performed in the laboratory and in the clinic by beginning scientists from medical research centers throughout the tri-state region. These cardiology fellows are physicians who are training to become adult or pediatric cardiologists.
WHO:
More than 40 fellows, including four from Children's, will give oral and poster presentations of their ongoing cardiovascular research.
The chairman of this year's event is J. Carter Ralphe, MD, a cardiologist at Children's and assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The lunchtime lecture will be given by renowned UPMC cardiologist James Shaver, MD, this year's AHA Pulse of Pittsburgh award winner.
Following the presentations, a panel of judges led by Dr. Ralphe will select the top three oral and top three poster presentations to receive awards.
In addition to Children's, participating institutions include the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Allegheny General Hospital, Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Carnegie Mellon University.
WHY:
"The American Heart Association plays a vital role in providing support for cardiovascular- and stroke-related research. A large portion of the grants the association awards are targeted for beginning scientists. This is crucial support that helps attract talented young investigators to a career in cardiovascular research," Dr. Ralphe said. "With 15 years of presentations to look back on, one can see the trajectory of cardiovascular research and appreciate the impact these young investigators from our region have made in the field of cardiology."
