Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation Develops Creative Way for Brides and Grooms To Help Local Kids

Couples planning their nuptials now have a way to make their wedding day extra special and even more meaningful: by making a donation to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation in lieu of traditional wedding favors.

On a day that celebrates the joining of two lives, it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the lives of kids being cared for at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation provides attractive table tents or cards so guests can remember not only the wedding event, but the special gift to the kids at Children’s.

For a suggested minimum donation of $20 per set of 10 cards, couples have two options for letting guests know that they have chosen to support the hospital that cares for more than 500,000 of the region’s children each year.

White Table Cards (2 x 3.5 inches, folded) have a preprinted line on the front for guests’ names, a space on the inside for their table number and an inscription that says “A gift has been made in your honor to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.”

Acknowledgement Cards (5 x 7 inches) may be displayed flat or rolled and tied with a ribbon and can be personalized with the bride and groom’s names, the date of the event and customized text.

The idea came about when Erin Teorsky, a local pediatric nurse, began planning her upcoming April wedding. Wanting to do something to “give back” to kids, Teorsky approached Foundation staff   about ways she could make a donation via her wedding. The idea of the cards was born.

“Every gift that is made to Children’s helps ensure excellent care for the children in our region. We are excited to partner with couples interested in this unique alternative to traditional wedding favors,” said Rachel Petrucelli, senior director of Major Gifts and Annual Programming at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. “They can celebrate their wedding, honor their guests and help children and families in need all at once.”

Petrucelli added that the Foundation has made the donation and favor process as simple as possible, to help brides and grooms have one less thing to worry about on their special day.

This program also is customizable for events other than weddings. Foundation staffers are happy to work with those who would like to support Children’s via a shower, graduation, anniversary celebration, bar/bat mitzvah, birthday or other event. After the donation is received, cards are typically mailed within two weeks.
