Renowned Children's Hospital Pediatrician Unveils The Future of Diagnostics – Eyes, Ears and Fingertips
WHO:
Basil J. Zitelli, MD
Chief, Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service
Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
Professor of Pediatrics
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
WHAT:
Nationally recognized as a leading pediatrician and diagnostician, Dr. Zitelli will lead a discussion examining the two most important tools at a physician's disposal – a thorough patient history and clinical exam.
Dr. Zitelli's presentation is titled "Back to the Future – With Apologies to Sir William Osler." The Continuing Medical Education event also will be available via live Web cast, and a post-event archived session.
Technological advancements have vastly improved the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases and conditions over the last two centuries, according to Dr. Zitelli. But an over-reliance on technology can be a pitfall that complicates efforts to make a diagnosis. Instead, a physician should rely first and foremost on his or her senses, taking a thorough history and clinical exam, and only using technology as an aide.
WHY:
Dr. Zitelli leads Children's Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service (DRS), one of the oldest and largest groups of hospitalists in the country. Hospitalists admit and care for patients while they are hospitalized. Children's DRS also offers an ambulatory service for physicians specializing in the diagnosis and management of patients with a wide array of complex pediatric medical conditions.
