Children’s Hospital Honors “Champions” of Child Abuse Prevention at Fourth Annual Conference on Hope and Healing

WHAT: Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is hosting its fourth annual Conference on Hope and Healing on April 23 and 24, 2009. The event will explore ways to prevent child abuse and neglect. It is being sponsored by the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) at Children’s Hospital, with support from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Victims of Crime, Allegheny County Children’s Court and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania’s Office of Children and Families in the Court.
The first day of the conference will feature plenary sessions with a keynote address, networking luncheon, awards ceremony and afternoon workshops. The second day will feature the opportunity to attend one of several full-day skill-building institutes. Workshops will include: medical evaluation of child maltreatment, forensic interviewing skills, vicarious trauma, independent living initiatives for youth in foster care, violence prevention and LGBTQ youth in foster care.
WHO: As part of this event, Children’s established the “Champion of Hope and Healing Award” for outstanding dedication and commitment to the health and welfare of children in this region. The awardees this year are:
Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania Attorney General
Stacy Johnson, Youth Support Specialist, Allegheny County Department of Human Services
WHY: The conference is being held in April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is an educational opportunity for social workers, caseworkers, legal advocates, police, faith-based organizations and others who work in the child welfare system.
