Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation Receives $3 Million for New Family Resource Center from Eden Hall Foundation

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation announced today that it has been awarded $3 million, one of the largest single gifts granted to date by the Eden Hall Foundation. The funding will support the naming of the 20,000-square-foot Elsa M. and Alma E. Mueller Family Resource Center, part of the new hospital campus set to open in 2009.

With the new center, Children’s will be among the first of its peers to pull together a whole host of non-medical services for inpatients and their families. Each year, it is estimated that more than 18,000 inpatients and their families will benefit from the services that will make up the Family Resource Center.

Said Sylvia Fields, Program Director of the Eden Hall Foundation, “We wanted to use this gift to honor the memory of the daughters of Elizabeth Heinz and Sebastian Mueller, who endowed the Eden Hall Foundation. Elsa and Alma were lost in childhood to diphtheria, an illness that caused many deaths in the late 1800s but that today can be treated and prevented because of institutions like Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.”

On the current Oakland campus, patients and families travel to every corner of the hospital facility for programs and activities that meet a variety of needs during their child’s hospitalization.

On the new campus, the Family Resource Center located on the sixth floor of the new Clinical Services Building will be like a town square. Patients and families will have convenient access to the hospital’s chapel, the activity atrium, outdoor garden, libraries, Family Learning/Skills Lab, Young Adult Resource Center, Family Business Center, family lounge, reading lounge, in-hospital school classrooms, Patient Representative’s Office, 24-hour playroom, and pastoral care.

This grant is the latest of several from the Eden Hall Foundation to the hospital dating back to 1983. Children’s President and Chief Executive Officer Roger A. Oxendale expressed his gratitude to the Eden Hall Foundation: “Children’s has an ambitious vision of the impact that the new campus can have, and the Eden Hall Foundation continues to be an enthusiastic partner in working to improve the health of our region’s children and the strength of pediatric healthcare overall.”
