Friends Honor Late Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Community Educator by Publishing Her Poems on Motherhood

Nearly 80 friends and family of Pearl L. Simmons, a Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh community educator who died from a blood infection last year at the age of 42, have helped to publish a book of her poetry to raise money for the hospital in her honor.

“A Moment in Time,” a 64-page collection of 17 poems by Mrs. Simmons, is available at several retail outlets and through Children’s. Many of the poems by Mrs. Simmons, a wife and mother of three, center on the joys and challenges of parenthood. Proceeds from sales of “A Moment in Time” benefit Children’s Community Education Program, which offers the Positive Parenting classes Mrs. Simmons taught.

For more than a decade, Mrs. Simmons taught Positive Parenting classes in the community – first as a volunteer and then as an employee. She also authored many articles and poems for publications, including local and national newspapers and magazines.

“Pearl was devoted to sharing her experiences as a parent with others,” said Brenda Gregg, director of community relations and health services at Children’s. “Her poems reflect that devotion and now this touching book of poetry will help continue the work that she so loved and that was so important to her.”

“A Moment in Time” also features an epilogue from Reid Simmons, Pearl’s husband; illustrations by family friend Cathy Schuster; and a poem by Pearl’s oldest son, Noah, which he wrote and dedicated to her this past Mother’s Day.

Proceeds benefit Children’s Positive Parenting programs, which are held at various sites throughout Allegheny County. Each year, the Positive Parenting series helps more than 3,000 parents learn how to build healthy, happy relationships with their children. In addition to single-session presentations for parent, school and religious groups, there are three-session and six-session workshops in which parents learn more than 30 discipline techniques that focus on positive reinforcement.

Editor’s note: “A Moment in Time” retails for $14 and is available at Borders Books & Music in Monroeville, the North Hills and South Hills; Barnes & Noble in Squirrel Hill; and Create-A-Frame and Portobello Gallery, both in the South Hills. For information or to order a copy, call the Children’s Foundation at 412-692-5318. The book can be ordered online by visiting www.chp.edu and clicking on “Giving to Children’s.”
