Children’s Hospital CEO Comments on Petition for Restraining Order
Pittsburgh, Pa. -
September 18, 2001
-
Ronald L. Violi, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, today issued the following statement in response to Highmark’s request for a restraining order:
“First and foremost, Children’s Hospital needs a new facility in an effort to continue serving the pediatric health care needs of this region. We believe that any effort to delay or prevent construction or the enhancement of our programs does an immense disservice to the children and families of this region.
During the past few years, we’ve been steadfast about our need for both capital and infrastructure improvements in order to maintain our status as a world-class Children’s Hospital. In light of that, we pursued every possible alternative in support of that objective, including discussions with other interested parties and community groups.
Highmark has had several opportunities to make an acceptable offer to Children’s Hospital - first at an April board meeting and again prior to our signing the letter of intent to merge with UPMC in May. UPMC’s proposal to our board of trustees was not only the best offer we received, it was the only formal offer that met our requirements of universal access for all children, enhancement of our research program and for the construction of a much-needed new hospital. In addition, this transaction has already received approval from the U.S. Justice Department.
Once again, we strongly advocate for all parties involved in the future of this region’s healthcare to support our mutual objective. We hope that Highmark, and any other third party, will reconsider any action that delays Children’s Hospital’s efforts to construct a much-needed new facility that will most definitely enhance the care of our young patients.”
