Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC’s Trauma Program Re-accredited By Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation
Children’s has one of the busiest trauma programs in the country
Pittsburgh, Pa. -

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC’s Benedum Pediatric Trauma Program – one of the busiest pediatric trauma centers in the nation – has been re-accredited by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) as a result of its demonstrated compliance with the statewide trauma care standards.
Children’s is the region’s only accredited Pediatric Regional Resource Trauma Center (PTC), and is one of three PTCs in Pennsylvania.
The PTSF, created in 1984, established guidelines to stimulate continuous and systematic improvement in the quality of care provided by the state trauma centers. The foundation conducted an on-site survey at Children’s earlier this year, and this resulted in Children’s receiving accreditation through Sept. 30, 2010.
“The Pennsylvania Trauma System Foundation’s survey team has confirmed the quality of our program and our commitment to the care of injured children in western Pennsylvania and throughout the region,” said Barbara A. Gaines, MD, director of Children’s trauma program. “Children who are critically injured have unique needs that are best met at a pediatric trauma center that can offer a full complement of pediatric services. Around the clock, Children’s has a team of specialists from pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic and cardiac surgery, as well as pediatric intensivists and anesthesiologists, ready to provide all-encompassing care to critically injured children. We also have physical and occupational therapists, social workers and Child Life specialists who specialize in working with children and their families.”
PTSF surveyors noted the key strengths of Children’s program include its multidisciplinary team of pediatric experts, pediatric trauma research to improve treatment and care of injured children and its Injury Prevention Program, which provides educational programs and services such as child passenger safety checks for children and families throughout the region on an regular basis.
More than 60,000 children are treated each year through Children’s emergency department and trauma program, including more than 1,700 children admitted for traumatic injuries.
