Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Names New Clinical Affairs Vice Chair To Lead Rapidly Growing Program

A. Kim Ritchey, MD, has been named vice chair for Clinical Affairs of the Department of Pediatrics.

In this newly created position, Dr. Ritchey will oversee the continued development of essential ongoing programs in addition to new initiatives for clinical excellence and growth. This includes developing ambulatory subspecialty access initiatives, establishing pediatric subspecialty outreach initiatives, and improving infrastructure for clinical activities in all divisions, to name a few. Dr. Ritchey also will be intricately involved in transitioning the ambulatory offices of the new hospital, as well as developing new models for inpatient subspecialty care.

Most recently, Dr. Ritchey served as chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. In his new role, he will be involved in recruitment for that position.

“This represents a wonderful opportunity for the department and Children’s to take our Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program to the next level of excellence,” said David H. Perlmutter, MD, physician-in-chief and scientific director at Children’s and the Vira I. Heinz Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics  at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “Under Kim’s leadership, the program has served as a model for providing extraordinary pediatric clinical care, top-notch teaching and a growing research effort. Children’s Hematology/Oncology program has been revered by medical students and residents alike for its superb teaching and role models, and Dr. Ritchey’s leadership has provided continuous progress in raising the visibility and excellence of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship training program.”

Dr. Ritchey is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Cincinnati Medical College. He was chief of the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at West Virginia University School of Medicine from 1986–1998 before coming to Pittsburgh in 1998. He has been listed repeatedly as one of the “Top Doctors” in Pittsburgh Magazine.

“I am excited about the opportunity to expand our essential pediatric programs at Children’s,” said Dr. Ritchey. “This is an important step in providing superior care to our patients as we prepare to move to the new hospital.”
