Children’s Hospital Names New Vice President of Medical Affairs

Children’s Urology Chief Steven G. Docimo, MD, named VP of Medical Affairs

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC President and CEO Roger A. Oxendale announced today that Steven G. Docimo, MD, will serve as the hospital’s new vice president of medical affairs, effective January 1, 2007.

Dr. Docimo, 48, currently serves as the chief of Children’s Division of Pediatric Urology. In addition to his new role, Dr. Docimo will maintain a part-time clinical practice and continue to see patients.

In this role, Dr. Docimo’s primary responsibilities will include the oversight of quality improvement, and patient safety, as well as serving as the hospital’s spokesperson on medical issues. Dr. Docimo also will closely collaborate with pediatric physician leaders to set medical policy and ensure Children’s continues to provide world-class patient care.

“Steve is a very talented, driven individual whose dedication to patients and commitment to the hospital are unmatched,” Oxendale said. “Steve has achieved many accomplishments for the betterment of the hospital during his tenure, including the significant growth of the Urology Division. I’m looking forward to working closely with him to continue to advance Children’s as one of the leading pediatric hospitals.”

Before coming to Children’s in 2000, Dr. Docimo spent seven years at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was professor of urology and director of pediatric endourology. He earlier had served in the U.S. Navy as lieutenant commander and had worked for three years as an attending urologist at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

Dr. Docimo received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1984 and completed his residency in urology with the Harvard Program, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His education also included a fellowship in pediatric urology at Johns Hopkins and a research fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Foundation for Urologic Diseases. Dr. Docimo is an internationally recognized leader in minimally invasive surgery, and is a highly experienced educator. He is a professor of pediatric urology, a professor of urology and the vice chair of the Department of Urology at Pitt’s School of Medicine.

Docimo replaces the late medical director Eugene Wiener, MD, who died in July 2006.

Dr. Docimo makes his home in Fox Chapel with his wife, Anne Boland Docimo, MD, and their children Katherine, William, Madeline and Danny.
