Research Interests
- IL-22 is an IL-10 family cytokine member known to play a role in host defense in multiple organ systems including the intestine, skin and lung. It was recently shown to be produced primarily by Th17 cells of the immune system, which also produce the proinflammatory cytokine IL-17. IL-22 is made by these primary immune cells, and acts on its target tissues by way of its receptor, IL-22R. The IL-22R is not present on immune cells, but is expressed in skin, digestive tract, kidney and lung. Multiple studies have shown that IL-22 upregulates proinflammatory gene expression such as antimicrobial peptides, in skin and colon. We are currently studying the role of IL-22 in lung host defense in conjunction with IL-17 in a variety of in vivo and ex vivo models.
