Biography Summary

For more than 30 years, Charles Bluestone, MD, has devoted his life's work to treating children with ear, nose and throat problems. He has become world-renowned in cutting-edge research that has influenced the diagnosis and treatment of otitis media (middle ear disease)-the most common infection among children in the United States after the common cold.

Dr. Bluestone is a Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

A pioneer in pediatric otolaryngology, Dr. Bluestone created Children's Hospital's Pediatric Otolaryngology Department in 1975 and served as its first full-time director. Since then, his unparalleled clinical care, teaching and research in pediatric otolaryngology have earned him national and international recognition. He has been credited with establishing Children's Hospital as the leading authority in innovative treatment options for children with ear, nose and throat disease.

Dr. Bluestone's research interests are focused primarily in the field of otitis media, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, and sinusitis in children. In 1980, he founded Children's Hospital's Otitis Media Research Center, which has gained international recognition for providing the most contributions to the current understanding of the causes and treatments of otitis media in infants and children.

Under his direction, the center is actively investigating medical and surgical treatments for otitis media and conducting laboratory and clinical studies related to the causes, development and management of the disease. Dr. Bluestone and his department have received research funding from the National Institutes of Health for more than two decades.

Among his many contributions, Dr. Bluestone initiated the fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Children's Hospital, where he has mentored more than 50 fellows, most of whom are now in academic medicine. His program was the first subspecialty in otolaryngology to receive accreditation.
