Radiology Patient Procedures

The procedure pages below have been designed to help parents and guardians and their children to better understand the radiology tests that have been scheduled by a physician.

• Barium Enema (BE) – A barium enema is a special X-ray of the large intestine and colon.
• CT Angiography – A CT angiography is a test that creates detailed images of the blood vessels in your body.
• CT Enterography – A CT enterography is a new diagnostic tool in evaluating small bowel disorders.
• CT Scan – A CT scan takes detailed pictures of inside the body called “slices” that are then put together by a computer.
• DMSA Renal (Kidney) Scan – A DMSA renal scan is a nuclear medicine test that gives detailed pictures of the kidneys and how they are working.
• Esophagram – An esophagram is a special X-ray of the esophagus.
• Gastric Emptying Study – A gastric emptying is a test that measures the time it takes for food to empty from the stomach and enter the small intestine.
• Image-Guided Biopsies – An image-guided biopsy is a procedure that takes tissue samples while your child is having a CT scan, an ultrasound, or an X-ray.
• Joint Aspiration or Joint Injection – Joint aspiration is done to remove fluid in the joint; Joint Injection is done to provide relief from joint pain.
• Modified Barium Swallow (Cookie Swallow) – A modified barium swallow is a special X-ray of the throat that shows how your child swallows.
• MRI/MRA Scan – A magnetic resonance imaging/magnetic resonance angiography scan takes very clear, detailed pictures of body parts and organs.

• Nuclear Medicine Tests – Nuclear medicine tests give doctors detailed pictures of certain activities going on in the body.
• Pediatric Interventional Radiology – Pediatric interventional radiology uses different types of machines to take pictures or images of certain areas and use these images for image-guided procedures for children.
• Pediatric Ultrasound – An ultrasound gives pictures of the inside of your child’s body using sound waves made by the ultrasound machine.
• Pediatric X-Ray – An X-ray is a picture of the inside of your child’s body.
• Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scans – A PET scan gives doctors detailed pictures of certain activities going on in the body.
• Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) – A PICC is a long, soft, flexible catheter or tube that is placed in a vein in the arm for long-term use.

• Sedation for Radiologic Studies – Sedation may be needed for your child to successfully complete the Radiology test that has been prescribed.
