Research Interests
I am a pulmonologist and genetic epidemiologist committed to research, teaching, mentoring, and clinical activities. My research goals are to identify genetic factors and early-life environmental exposures that influence the pathogenesis of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in general and among Hispanics in particular.
Few studies of the genetics or epidemiology of obstructive airway diseases have included Hispanics. To attempt to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of asthma and COPD in Hispanics, I lead two studies of the genetics and epidemiology of obstructive airway diseases in individuals of Hispanic descent. The first study employs a family-based design to examine the relation between genetic variants and COPD in an isolated Hispanic population in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. The second study uses a case-control design to examine the relation among genetic variants, allergen exposure, and asthma in Puerto Ricans living in Hartford (CT) and in the island of Puerto Rico. To date, phenotypic and genotypic data have been collected in ~750 members of families of individuals with COPD in Costa Rica, and ~1,050 Puerto Rican children with and without asthma.
Because of my interest in the relation between microbial exposures and immune system development, I conducted a pilot study of the relation between the maternal and neonatal intestinal flora in early life and the development of asthma and allergies in childhood. Results from this pilot study will serve as preliminary data for a proposal for a Program Project Grant (PPG) on the relation between the intestinal flora in early life and allergic diseases.
I am keenly interested in mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists. I was deeply humbled and honored to be the first faculty member of Harvard Medical School to ever receive both the Young Mentor Award (2005) and the A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award (2010).
My clinical activities in pediatric and adult pulmonology sharpen my understanding of the phenotypes that are relevant to our studies on the genetic epidemiology of complex respiratory diseases.
