Media Tours Showcase New Hospital
On a Saturday in late October, print, radio and television reporters and camera people toured the new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC campus in Lawrenceville.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Dennis Roddy summed up the reactions of many of the media visitors:
[The new Children’s] will have room, not to mention walls of natural light, and a city vista that, on some floors, takes in the skyscrapers of Downtown, the spires of Oakland, and the surrounding hills that stretch into the eastern suburbs. Planners took note of the nearly subterranean atmosphere of most city hospitals, where windows are at a premium and fluorescent lighting has displaced the sun. Part of the advantage of the new site is that it has the space needed to factor in natural light.
The building tour also resulted in features in the Pittsburgh Business Times, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and on WPXI-TV, WTAE-TV, KDKA-TV and KQV Radio.
Hospital administrators have fixed the date for the patient move into the new hospital — May 2, 2009. As of that date, the new hospital will be fully operational and no patients will be seen at the Oakland building.
As shown in the chart below, Children’s staff members will occupy the new buildings in stages as they are completed in the months leading up to the patient move. Two mock trials of the patient move are planned, one in March 2009 and one in April 2009. By April 2009, the hospital will have completed the department and office moves and will be focusing all its attention on the transition of clinical operations.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation recently committed to providing $46.8 million in additional funding for the new Lawrenceville campus. This additional commitment, which increases the Foundation’s support of the project to $96.8 million, includes funds for a number of important enhancements to the scope of the new campus, such as the build-out of two additional bed units, which will add 46 more inpatient beds to the new hospital and increase the total capacity to 296 beds. The additional commitment also will fund the build-out of four more minimally invasive surgery rooms and the addition of PET/CT scan equipment, a dialysis unit, family pantries for inpatient units and a music therapy room. In addition to raising construction funds for the new Children’s campus, the Foundation will continue its efforts to raise much-needed programmatic funds in support of the hospital’s clinical, research and teaching mission.
Meanwhile at the Lawrenceville construction site, the new Children’s campus has grown into its final shape. In the photo above, shot in early October, you can clearly see how the hospital is bounded by 44th and 45th streets. This view is from the back of the campus, looking toward Penn Avenue. The building in the immediate foreground is the staff parking garage, attached to the John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center and the midcampus parking garage. To the left is 45th Street, running along the cemetery wall and separating the triangular Central Plant and Faculty Pavilion buildings from the main hospital. Now closed to traffic, 45th Street will be the main artery into the campus for most visitors when the hospital opens after the patient move on May 2, 2009.

Eat'n Park Atrium |
Eat’n Park Atrium
Elsa M. and Alma E. Mueller Family Resource Center
Construction of the new hospital is progressing well at the Lawrenceville campus. To the right, a recent photograph shows progress in the Eat’n Park Atrium, compared to the architectural rendering below it. The Eat’n Park Atrium, a wonderful four-story open space for activities, is just one of many features which will make up the Family Resource Center on the hospital’s sixth floor. The Eat’n Park Atrium will include a theatre-size projection screen viewable from the playrooms on the patient units as well as the connecting corridors.
Children’s new Family Resource Center will be unprecedented in the way it pulls together a whole host of non-medical supportive services for our patients and their families. On the present Oakland campus, patients and families travel to every corner of the hospital facility for programs and activities that meet a variety of needs during their child’s visit.
On the new campus, the Family Resource Center will be like the hospital’s town square. Patients and families will enjoy convenient access to the chapel, the Eat ’n Park Atrium, the Howard Hanna Healing Garden, the Blaxter Professional Resource Library, the Moulis Children’s Library, a family learning/skills lab, a young adult resource center, a family business center, a family lounge, a reading lounge, in-hospital school classrooms, patient representatives‘ offices, an extended-hours playroom and Pastoral Care Services.
In recognition for a gift from the Eden Hall Foundation to support the construction of this area, it will be known as the Elsa M. and Alma E. Mueller Family Resource Center.

Staff Parking Garage
Construction is progressing well on the Staff Parking Garage at Children’s new hospital campus. To the right, see a recent photograph of the Staff Garage, compared to the architectural rendering below it. The garage is scheduled for completion in early August, and will be used to accommodate the increasing number of construction workers on-site.
Many questions have come in to the project management office, regarding the parking situation at the new campus. The Lawrenceville campus was designed and is being built to include the maximum number of parking spaces allowed by the City of Pittsburgh planning division — a total of approximately 1,400 spaces. This equates to roughly twice as many on-site spaces as are in use by Children’s in Oakland today. This will help us to serve our patients and families extremely well. Compared with our current scenario, more on-site parking spaces will be available for staff, although we will not be able to meet the parking needs of all employees through on-site parking. A site in Lawrenceville within close proximity of the campus is being acquired for off-site parking. A shuttle service will operate to and from this lot. Employees will still be required to pay for parking, although details about parking assignments, shuttle schedule and rates have not yet been determined. In addition, we are continuing to work with the Port Authority of Allegheny County and other organizations to facilitate increased accessibility to the Lawrenceville campus via public transportation.

John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center
The new John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center is now under construction on the Lawrenceville campus. The construction photo was taken from atop the mid-campus parking garage on April 23, during the iron workers’ steel topping-off ceremony as the final beam was raised. During the ceremony, a crane lifted the beam, which was covered in signatures and topped with the traditional American flag, broom and evergreen tree.
Upon its completion late next year, the 10-story, 300,000 square-foot research facility will have seven of its 10 stories dedicated to medical research activities. The lab floors are designed on the basis of an open laboratory concept to foster interaction between individual laboratories and sharing of equipment.
Each floor has administrative and conference areas and break rooms overlooking the Pittsburgh skyline and Allegheny River. Also, the third floor will house the campus’ state-of-the-art conference center.
Compare progress of the Research Center’s steel erection to the architectural rendering. Again, this view is from atop the mid-campus parking garage looking across its rooftop garden toward the Research Center and the Plaza Building to the east (left side of the photo). The Research Center, Plaza Building and Hospital will be connected via a glass-enclosed walkway.

| Patient Corridor Photo taken May 2007 |
There are nurse servers which are accessible from both the patient room and corridor which will house clean and soiled supplies in separate compartments. These will provide staff easy access to supplies as well as limit disruption to the patient and family. Observation stations with windows looking into the room will allow caregivers visual access to the patient. Each station provides access for clinical documentation and chart review. Nurse stations/care team stations are strategically located throughout each unit to provide caregivers immediate access to the patient. While patient rooms are on the perimeter of each unit, the core houses administrative and service functions which support patient care and family needs. This includes space for offices, work areas, equipment storage, family pantries, etc.

Transformation Corridor |
For the full 240-foot length, the walls and flooring artistically depict the new hospital’s central theme of transformation to better health. The inlaid scene on the terrazzo floor transitions through the four seasons, while the interior wall shows a caterpillar’s metamorphosis to a butterfly. Opposite this brightly colored, larger-than-life mural, a wall of windows saturates the corridor in natural light. The hope is that families will feel that they are entering a place of hope and renewal. Visitors passing through the Transformation Corridor will have the opportunity to take advantage of the services provided by our gift shop and Outpatient Pharmacy, both of which will be located at the end of the corridor.

There is excitement on the site to see the purple aluminum exterior installed on the top floors surrounding the building. The installation of drywall began in February on the second floor and is proceeding up the building on floors 3 and 4. Crews began painting walls on the second floor. The construction of the Central Plant expansion is largely complete, and the building will be operational by June 1.
February 2007
| Private Patient Room Photo taken February 2007 |
You can see the progress of the plumbing for medical gases and the electrical work, which is nearing completion before drywall is installed. The patient rooms are designed to create a homelike environment with three zones in mind — patient, family and caregiver. Using bright colors, soft fabrics and natural wood trims, the rooms will convey an atmosphere of warmth and comfort.
Observation stations just outside each patient room will allow caregivers to work on the computer and maintain visual access into the room. Pass through nurse servers that open to the room and the corridor will enhance privacy for patients and families and make it easy to stock supplies and clear dirty linens and dietary trays in the corridor. Each room will contain a bathroom, two separate sleeping areas for families, ample storage space, a work area and an entertainment system with access to movies and games similar to what is available in most hotels.

October–December 2006
During the last quarter of 2006, the exterior view of the new hospital campus changed significantly. The Hospital envelope/close-in activities began in October on the west side, and were complete (not including the windows) by mid December. The large rooftop air handling units arrived in October and soon were installed. The installation of brick veneer began on the west elevation of the building and drywall was installed on the second floor. At the Rangos Research Center, concrete footers and foundation walls were installed and structural steel erection began. Excavation work continued for the staff parking garage in anticipation of the pouring of concrete for the foundation walls.
