Curriculum
Clinical
First Year
- Outpatient Clinic: three half-day clinics: two in pediatrics and one half-day in medicine
- Inpatient Service: five months (non-consecutive) with every fourth weekend on call. Night call is taken from home by beeper.
Second and Third Year
- Outpatient Clinic: one to two half-day clinics per week
- Inpatient Service: one month at the beginning of the second year
- The majority of the second and third years are devoted to research.
- Call is one out of every four to six weeks.
Research
All fellows undertake a research project. The final one to two years of the fellowship are focused on this, with only one to two half-days per week in clinic, one inpatient month at the start of the second year, and call only on the weekends.
Education
- Allergy Grand Rounds occurs every other Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. Presentations are made by: 1) faculty and fellows from within the division; 2) faculty from the University of Pittsburgh; and 3) nationally known speakers from outside the university.
- Case Conference occurs every other Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. The conference is attended by divisional faculty, fellows, and community allergists.
- Immunology Didactic Conference occurs every other Thursday at noon. Fellows and faculty review basic immunology and immunodeficiency disease states.
- Board Review Course occurs every other Thursday at noon. The course uses textbooks, review materials, DVD recorded lectures, and questions and answers to review material for the boards.
- Journal Club is held every other Friday with the allergy and immunology faculty. On a quarterly basis, a journal club focusing on asthma is held with the pulmonologists.
