2008 Driving Directions to Children’s Main Hospital
To Our Parents and Visitors:
Please allow extra time when traveling to Oakland, home to Children’s main hospital, many physicians’ offices and other health care facilities. Road construction is underway, involving lane restrictions on Fifth Avenue, Forbes Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies. Learn more about road construction projects in Oakland.
Detours during the Boulevard of the Allies bridge construction project are provided below.
From the North via I-79 and I-279(Parkway North)
If you are coming to Children’s Hospital from the North, take Interstate 79 South to Interstate 279 South. This is Exit 72 (Pittsburgh). Follow Interstate 279 South toward Pittsburgh Do not exit onto I-579 (Veterans Bridge). Remain on I-279 and follow the signs for I-376 East. Follow I-376 to the Forbes Avenue Exit. Forbes is a one-way street. Follow Forbes for five traffic lights to Atwood Street and turn left. Go one block on Atwood Street to the stoplight. Turn left onto Fifth Avenue and get in the far right-hand lane. Take the first right into the Children’s Hospital driveway and proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
From the South via I-79 and I-279 (Parkway West)
If you are coming to Children’s Hospital from the South, take Interstate 79 North to Exit 59A (Pittsburgh). Follow Interstate 279 North through the Fort Pitt Tunnels and across the Fort Pitt Bridge. At the end of the Fort Pitt Bridge, exit immediately to the right, onto I-376. Follow I-376 to the Forbes Avenue exit. This is Exit 2A. Follow Forbes Avenue, which is a one-way street for five traffic lights, to Atwood Street and turn left. Go one block on Atwood Street to the stoplight and turn left on to Fifth Avenue. Get in the far right-hand lane and take the first right into the Children’s Hospital driveway and proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
From the Liberty Tunnels and Liberty Bridge
At the end of the Liberty Bridge, do not use the exit for Boulevard of the Allies and Oakland. Continue straight ahead and watch for the signs for Forbes Avenue. At the Forbes Avenue traffic light, turn right. Travel approximately 3 miles on Forbes to Oakland. From Forbes, turn left onto Atwood Street. Go one block. Turn left onto Fifth Avenue, and get into the far right-hand lane. Take the first right into Children’s Hospital driveway. Proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
From the East
If you are coming to Children’s Hospital from the East, take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 57. This is the Pittsburgh/Monroeville Exit to Interstate 376 West. Follow Interstate 376 West to Exit 3B. This is the exit for Oakland/885 North. Bear right off the ramp onto Bates Street (885 North). Stay on Bates Street through the first traffic light approximately five blocks. Turn left at the second traffic light onto Atwood Street. Follow Atwood to its end and turn left on to Fifth Avenue. Get in the far right-hand lane and take the first right into the Children’s Hospital driveway and proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
From the West and the Airport
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike East to Exit 10, the New Castle exit, to Route 60 South. Follow route 60 South past the Pittsburgh International Airport to Interstate 279 North. Follow Interstate 279 North through the Fort Pitt tunnels and across the Fort Pitt Bridge. At the end of the Fort Pitt Bridge, exit immediately to the right, onto I-376. Follow I-376 to the Forbes Avenue exit. This is Exit 2A. Follow Forbes Avenue, which is a one-way street for five traffic lights, to Atwood Street and turn left. Go one block on Atwood Street to the stoplight and turn left on to Fifth Avenue. Get in the far right-hand lane and take the first right into the Children’s Hospital driveway and proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
If the Boulevard of the Allies closure forces you to exit onto I-376 eastbound
Exit at Squirrel Hill and take the far ramp marked “Greenfield.” At the first traffic light, turn right, cross the Greenfield Bridge, and follow the road as it bends to the left. At the first traffic light, turn left. This puts you onto the westbound Boulevard of the Allies. Turn right at the third traffic light onto Bates Street, then turn left at the first traffic light onto Atwood Street. Follow Atwood to its end and turn left on to Fifth Avenue. Get in the far right-hand lane and take the first right into the Children’s Hospital driveway and proceed to hospital entrance for self or valet parking.
