Gas Supply, Demand and Middle Ear Gas Balance: Specific Aim 3a Part ii

Protocol Description

This study is being done to see how gas levels and air pressure within the middle ear are affected by blood flow to the middle ear. Having the middle ear pressure equal atmospheric pressure allows for the proper transfer of sound waves, and the ears’ Eustachian tubes usually serve to equalize pressure. However some individual’s ears are able to maintain equal pressures even when the Eustachian tubes do not often open.

Eligibility Criteria

The study is seeking healthy adult volunteers of both genders and between the ages of 18 to 40.
Males: 18 to 40 years
Females: 18 to 40 years

Requirements
Participants will visit Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for two to three visits, including an initial screening visit, a CT scan and breathing experiments in which participants will be inhale a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide.
Visits: Up to 3
Duration: Less than 1 month
