Ear Pressure Regulation Related to Eardrum Characteristics
Gas Supply, Demand and Middle-Ear Gas Balance: Specific Aim 3c
Protocol Description
This study is being done to determine how easily gas can pass between the environment and the middle ear by way of the eardrum. If gas exchange across the eardrum is documented and the rate is sufficiently high, this may help explain past observations, such as why middle ear pressure does not change very much in some children and adults when they have a cold or flu. Researchers also expect that the rate of gas exchange across the eardrum will depend on whether or not the eardrum has scarred or abnormally thin regions.
Eligibility Criteria
Adults ages 18 to 50 of both genders and any race, may be screened for this study. From the screening, participants will be selected on the diagnosis of at least one healthy middle ear and either an eardrum with areas of scarring or an eardrum with areas of thinness.
Males: From 18 to 50 years of age
Females: From 18 to 50 years of age
Requirements
Following the initial screening visit, participants will have a test done that measures the rate of gas transfer across the eardrum.
