Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is dedicated to the training of fellows in academic pediatric emergency medicine. Our fellowship program is available to both the pediatrics-trained applicant as well as those who have received training in emergency medicine. The program is organized to provide training in the four key aspects of pediatric emergency medicine: clinical, research, teaching, and administrative.

Clinical

Children’s Hospital is the region's only Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center and the primary pediatric referral facility in the region. Children's Emergency Department evaluates and treats more than 75,000 patients a year. The catchments area and census expose fellows to a wide variety of clinical problems and disease states. The required rotations are listed below in addition to numerous elective opportunities.

Child Advocacy Center	1 month
Adult ED	2 months
Anesthesiology	2 weeks
Adult Trauma	1 month
Toxicology	1 month
EMS	1 month
Ultrasound	2 weeks

The emergency medicine trained applicant will complete rotations in Pediatric ICU (1 month), anesthesiology (2 weeks), neonatology (1 month), general pediatrics (1 month), toxicology (1 month), well-baby nursery (1 month) and ultrasound (2 weeks).

Optional Electives

Pediatric otolaryngology, dermatology, radiology, plastic surgery, and others.

Research

A formal seminar on principles of epidemiology, statistics, study design, and methodology provides fellows with a framework for understanding clinical research. With faculty supervision, fellows are expected to design and execute one or more independent research projects and are encouraged to participate in additional investigations.

Teaching

A major component involves supervising and teaching residents and students in the Emergency Department. Fellows receive formal instruction in lecture design and teaching methods. Fellows also participate as speakers in a variety of formal and informal settings in and outside Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Administrative

Fellows learn the principles of administration in weekly administrative meetings and by involvement in the day-to-day operations of the emergency room. Fellows are expected to assume an administrative role in a designated program in the Emergency Department.
