Pediatric Cancer Services

• Advanced Cancer Technology — Our pediatric hematology/oncology experts use state-of-the-art technology to provide the most current childhood cancer treatments.
• Multidisciplinary Pediatric Cancer Care — Our patients receive complete care from a wide range of pediatric medical experts — from surgeons to social workers.
• Family-Centered Cancer Care — Our pediatric hematology/oncology team not only provides outstanding patient care, but also helps family members cope with a cancer diagnosis. A counselor, child-life specialist, and social worker are all part of the health care team.

Childhood Cancer Programs

UPMC Children’s Hematology/Oncology Division has highly specialized treatment programs for children with brain tumors, bone cancer, and blood diseases.

• The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program provides expert care for children who have tumors of the brain and spinal cord.
• The Coagulation Clinic has dedicated staff for diagnosing and treating bleeding and clotting problems.
• The Sickle Cell and Hemophilia Programs provide complete and preventive care to children with sickle cell anemia and related blood disorders.

All patient care programs offer support services for the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.

Dedicated Hematology/Oncology Units at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Unit

Our inpatient unit serves about 1,220 children with cancer each year.

The unit has 11 general oncology beds and 6 bone marrow transplant beds.

Marty Ostrow Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Center

For outpatient cancer care, UPMC Children’s has the Marty Ostrow Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Center.

Designed to provide a comfortable setting for children to receive cancer treatments and follow-up care, the center handles close to 6,800 outpatient visits each year.

The center consists of:

• 6 exam rooms
• 3 treatment rooms
• 2 isolation rooms
• An infusion room
• A lab for on-site testing
• A pharmacy
• A special play area

Referral Requirements for Cancer Care at Children's Hospital

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh requires referrals from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialists. Patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from their insurance provider and primary care physician.

At the time of the telephone referral, your doctor will need to provide a brief clinical history. He or she will also need to fax all pertinent lab reports to the treatment center.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology must receive all necessary referral and authorization forms before the patient’s visit.
