Biography Summary

Alka Goyal, MD, is a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Delhi in 1979 and earned a medical degree from Lady Hoarding Medical College, University of Delhi, in 1984.

Dr. Goyal completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Connecticut Health Center. She earned a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Washington University, St. Louis, and an advanced postdoctoral research fellowship awarded by AGA. Dr. Goyal has been an assistant professor in pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine since 1998.

Dr. Goyal has studied the role of a protein, epimorphin, in the development of the gut. Her current research interests include inflammatory bowel disease, particularly the role of cytokine polymorphisms that can affect the disease phenotype, severity, and response to therapy; and gut disorders associated with autism. She also has been an advisor to a committee exploring research into treatment options for children with autism.
