Biography Summary
Sara Hamel, MD, is associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Director of Clinical Training, UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also supervisor of Medical Student, Resident and Fellow education for the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics / Child Development Unit. Dr. Hamel is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician with the Division of Developmental - Behavioral Pediatrics/Child Development Unit at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She came to Children's Hospital in 1993 from Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she completed her training in developmental and behavioral pediatrics.
A native of Cincinnati, Dr. Hamel attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, as an undergraduate earning a bachelor's degree in biology in 1978. Dr. Hamel earned her medical degree from Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill., in 1982 and completed a transitional internship and residency in pediatrics at Cook County Hospital Chicago, Ill. In 1990, Dr. Hamel completed a fellowship in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics where she then served as assistant professor of pediatrics until 1992.
Dr. Hamel is the coordinator of Behavioral/Developmental Training, Child Development Unit, including collaboration with community based organizations and mentors hosting residents. As director of clinical training in the UCLID Center, Dr. Hamel coordinates an interdisciplinary clinical training program at the UCLID Center including on-site community based care coordination and consultation services for families and their healthcare providers. As part of the UCLID interdisciplinary programs, Dr. Hamel is also responsible for teaching communication skills and family centered practice at the medical school level, teaching in family practice residency, pediatric nurse practitioner program, and graduate school of public health, school of health and rehabilitation sciences.
Dr. Hamel is board-certified in pediatrics and developmental-behavioral pediatrics. She is a member of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association.
