For Clinicians
How to Apply
Application to the Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) residency program must be made through the San Francisco Matching Program. Information and application forms can be found here.
Application deadline is September 18, 2009.
Prerequisities for child neurology and NDD include completion of a minimum of two years of an ACGME-approved residency program in pediatrics and steps I, II, and III of the USMLE. Foreign medical graduates must have an up-to-date ECFMG certification and have successfully completed steps I, II, and III of the USMLE. Eligible candidates will be invited for an interview. Candidates who wish to participate in the 5-year integrated program with pediatrics and those who choose to complete their pediatric residency elsewhere will be considered.
For those interested in our 5-year integrated program with pediatrics, an additional application will be needed through ERAS. Eligible candidates for both programs will be invited for interviews after review of both applications, 3 letters of recommendation, and documentation of USMLE completion.
Interviews
The interview process will be arranged by Neurology or NDD so that candidates may visit both of these programs during the same visit. The program coordinators for pediatrics and child neurology/neurodevelopmental disabilities will contact you about interview dates once all of the application information has been received and reviewed.
Additionally, those applicants who wish to interview in general pediatrics and neurology or NDD will have their interviews coordinated over a two-day period. An interview is a mandatory part of the application process. Once an interview invitation has been extended, it is the responsibility of the applicant to arrange a date with the program directors (Child Neurology/NDD: Natalie Schmerin 412-692-7490 and Pediatrics: Machele Maus 412-692-5285). Interviews in Pediatrics are usually conducted on Monday, and those in Child Neurology/NDD on Tuesday or Wednesday. The interview is a full day in length and includes a welcome by the program coordinator/program director, interviews with child neurology and NDD faculty, tours of the hospital and clinics, lunch with the residents, and an interview with the adult neurology program director. For those who can arrive in Pittsburgh on the evening prior to the interview, there is a dinner with some of the child neurology residents.
Applicants who wish to become board certified in pediatrics, child neurology, and NDD will be required to complete specific rotations in pediatrics during the two-year training period. The requirements can be found here.
