Influence of Obesity and Diabetes on Cardiovascular Risk

Postprandial Glycemia in the Free Living Condition and CardioMetabolic Risk in Obese Youth

Protocol Description

As diabetes and obesity are two leading causes of increased risk of cardiovascular disease, this study applies new medical technology for early detection of blood sugar elevation in real time during one’s daily routine in children who might be at risk. Through this study, researchers plan to also evaluate cardiovascular disease risk, if and when one detects high blood sugars early.

Eligibility Criteria

Overweight males and females, ages 12 to 20, who are not dieting or taking medications for blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides or glucose metabolism, will be considered.
Males: Ages 12 to 20
Females: Ages 12 to 20

Requirements
A screening visit is necessary to evaluate eligibility. This is similar to a typical well-child doctor’s visit, when health related questions will be asked and a physical examination will be performed by a doctor. If eligible, an overnight stay at the Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center will be scheduled for testing using ultrasound technology to assess the health of blood vessels, and other blood tests. A clinic visit will be scheduled for three days later to complete testing.
Visits: 2 clinic visits and 1 overnight stay
Duration: 3 visits within 3 months

Status: Open for Enrollment
