New Hospital Campus

High above the Allegheny River, the new home of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is rising. The construction picks up pace every day as we get closer to our May 2009 opening date.

Our new campus will be one of the premier pediatric hospitals in the world — whether you look at advanced technology and research facilities or clinical departments.

In keeping with Children’s Hospital’s commitment to family-centered care, we have put a great deal of thought and care into what kinds of experiences families will have in the new hospital.

Patients and families will experience an environment filled with sunlight. You will rarely be out of sight of a window.

The new hospital will give families access to an unprecedented range of non-medical services within easy reach. With the help of $3 million awarded by the Eden Hall Foundation, Children’s has developed the 20,000-square-foot Elsa M. and Alma E. Mueller Family Resource Center at the new hospital campus.

The Family Resource Center will be like the hospital’s town square, where patients and families will be near the chapel, the Eat’n Park Atrium, the Howard Hanna Healing Garden, the Blaxter Professional Resource Library, the Moulis Children’s Library, a family learning/skills lab, a young adult resource center, a family business center, a family lounge, a reading lounge, in-hospital school classrooms, patient representatives’ offices, an extended-hours playroom and Pastoral Care Services.

The Eat’n Park Atrium, a four-story open space for activities, will feature a theater-size projection screen viewable from the playrooms on the patient units.

And the new hospital will also contribute to the well-being of parents and Children’s staff. This year, the General Nutrition Centers (GNC) Live Well Foundation pledged $500,000 toward the creation of the GNC Family Wellness Center in the new campus. With the new center, Children’s will be among the first of its peers to offer an on-site gym and recreation facility for parents of patients, as well as for hospital staff.
