Insurance

Health Insurance: The standard health insurance plan for the trainee and his/her eligible dependent(s) is Advantage HMO and is provided at no cost to the trainee. 

Dental Insurance: There are two plans offered to trainees through United Concordia Companies, Inc. (UCCI).  The standard plan is provided at no cost to trainee.  A premium plan option is available for a minimal contribution.

Vacation: Three weeks for all fellows plus one week to be used for educational purposes (conferences, etc).

Life Insurance: Life insurance coverage is provided to the nearest $1000 above the annual salary and includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment.  The option to purchase Supplemental Life Insurance, as well as Life Insurance for trainee’s spouse and children are available at a minimal cost to trainee.

Disability Insurance: Paid short-term disability of up to 26 weeks of complete disability is provided.  Trainee must provide proof that (s)he is disabled and under the care of a physician. Long-term disability insurance coverage also is provided.

Retirement Savings Plan: Trainees have the opportunity to participate in UPMC’s Retirement Savings Plan.

Flexible Spending Accounts: Trainees are eligible to enroll in Health Care Flexible Spending Accounts and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts.

Professional Liability Insurance:  Coverage is provided in accordance with Pennsylvania state-mandated levels of coverage by Tri-Century Insurance.

 

Salary

Salary will be at the appropriate post-graduate level and will be paid by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Current (09–10) salaries:  PGY4  $49,982/year  
  PGY5  $53,227/year
  PGY6  $54,434/year

 

Education

  • At this time each fellow currently receives a stipend of $1,000 which is awarded for the use in travel or for book purchases
  • Expenses are paid to attend one professional meeting
  • Expenses are paid for presentation of any research paper

 

Vacation

Three weeks of vacation are allotted each year.  These may be taken consecutively.  In addition, a holiday schedule is followed during the Christmas/New Year season.

 

Uniforms

Scrubs are provided for surgical procedures.
