Relationship of Weight and Diabetes to Cardiovascular Disease

Children with Type 1 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to determine if overweight children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) have more early signs of cardiovascular disease than lean children with T1DM and overweight children with no diabetes.

Eligibility Criteria

The study is currently accepting boys and girls between the ages of 12 to 17 years who have T1DM, as well as children in the same age range who are overweight but do not have diabetes.
Boys: Ages 12 to 17
Girls: Ages 12 to 17

Requirements
Participants with type 1 diabetes will be admitted one time to the Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for a 24- to 30-hour overnight stay. At that time, tests and procedures will be performed to determine body composition, assess insulin sensitivity, and check the health of blood vessels using ultrasound technology. Participants who are overweight and do not have known diabetes will come for a visit, not requiring an overnight stay, where they will be checked for diabetes as well as determining body composition and the health of their blood vessels using ultrasound technology.
