Hepatoblastoma Risk Factors
Low Birth Weight & Other Risk Factors for Hepatoblastoma
Protocol Description
The primary purpose of this study is to understand how genes and the environment may relate to the risk of developing hepatoblastoma, a childhood cancer of the liver. To do this, researchers compare the environment and genes of children with hepatoblastoma to that of children without this disease. The Children’s Oncology Group (COG), an international cooperative of hospitals, is conducting this study.
Eligibility Criteria
Babies and children up to age 6 diagnosed with hepatoblastoma who are registered with the COG.
Boys: Newborn to age 6
Girls: Newborn to age 6
Requirements
A telephone questionnaire about the family’s health and medical history and home environment will be conducted with participating mothers of children diagnosed with hepatoblastoma. Medical records related to the mother’s third trimester of pregnancy will be needed, and for low-birthweight children, records pertaining to postnatal treatments. Participants will also provide cheek-swab samples of themselves allowing for the isolation of cells that determine features of their genetic make-up. The swabs are returned in prepaid mailers.
