Rotation Schedule

The Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has 27 positions at each level in categorical Pediatrics, four residents at each level in its combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program, and two residents at each level in its Triple Board Program (Pediatrics / Psychiatry / Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).

PL-1 Year
The intern year is focused on learning to take direct care of patients in multiple settings, with appropriate supervision from senior residents and faculty. Interns spend time on the inpatient floors (general and specialty teams), in the primary care setting, as well as in the NICU, newborn nursery, and Emergency Department. Half of the inpatient rotations are q4 overnight call and the other half have a night team system.

PL-2 Year
The PL-2 year is devoted to acquiring additional clinical skills, developing independence, and gaining more experience in leadership and supervision. Required rotations include intensive care, child development and behavior, inpatient specialty services, neonatology, adolescent medicine, and emergency pediatrics. Second-year residents provide supervision on certain inpatient teams, medical and specialty.

PL-3 Year
The PL-3 year allows a great deal of time for a full range of specialty electives chosen by the resident and includes supervisory experiences on the inpatient general and specialty medical teams, in the Primary Care Center, the Emergency Department, and the NICU as well as further experience in intensive care. International and community service opportunities are available and encouraged, as are rotations in either a rural practice or an urban community.

Each rotation lasts two to four weeks. PL-1 residents on inpatient rotations are scheduled for a combination of overnight q4 call and Night Team. PL-2 and PL-3 residents on inpatient rotations participate in a short call system during the week and take overnight weekend call. The Night Team provides coverage overnight Sunday through Thursday. During call months, residents get at least one call-free weekend. Several electives in the second and third year are free from call obligations. The schedule is adjusted yearly to balance educational and service needs.
