Our Services

Teen Volunteer Program

We invite teens ages 14 to 17 to participate in a rewarding and worthwhile volunteer experience from June through August every year. As our Hospital Volunteer Program requires volunteers to be ages 18 and over, this is a special opportunity to engage teens who are interested in volunteering at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Teens that are accepted into the program are placed in a variety of areas throughout the hospital ranging from direct interaction with patients and families in playrooms, to supporting waiting room areas, to assisting with escorting patients within the inpatient setting. Teen volunteers are supervised by Children’s staff members.

The Teen Volunteer Program is very popular and often there are more applicants than available openings. We encourage teen applicants to submit their applications early and be thoughtful in the completion of all application materials.

Teen Volunteer Application

Teen volunteer applicants must complete the following steps by the April 10, 2015, deadline date to be considered for the 2015 Teen Volunteer Program:

To request a copy of the 2015 New Teen Volunteer Application Packet mailed to you, please call 412-692-5185.

Teen Volunteer Program Requirements

  • To qualify for the program, teens must be between 14 and 17 years of age.
  • Candidates must be 14 years of age on January 1 of that calendar year.
  • If you turn 18 years old before the start date of that year’s program, then you are no longer eligible to participate in the Teen Volunteer Program. However, you would be eligible to begin the transition to become a part of the Hospital Volunteer Program.
  • Commit to a weekly schedule of 3 to 4 hours of volunteer service for a minimum of 8 weeks between June and August. A limited number of teens may qualify to volunteer during the school year. Teens that have already volunteered in the summer program, will be selected for school year assignments based on merit and availability.
  • Complete all steps of the application process (new Teen Applicants only):
  • Attend one of the scheduled Volunteer Orientations. This is a mandatory training session and to become a teen volunteer, you must attend one of these sessions. Returning teens are required to attend a Refresher Session.
  • All volunteers must have an updated TB test and complete the required paperwork. The TB form will be emailed to candidates who are offered assignments. You must turn in the TB form to us with your test results before you are able to start your volunteer experience.

Returning Teens

All previous Teen Volunteer will be contacted early in the calendar year, inviting them back to the program as long as they met the minimum requirements the previous summer. Each will be asked to complete a Returning Teen Volunteer packet. If you have not received your packet, please contact the Volunteer Services Department at 412-692-5185 or via email at chpvolunteer@chp.edu to have one emailed to you.

In addition to completing this paperwork, all returning volunteers are also required to have a TB test and attend one of two scheduled refresher orientation sessions (usually held in late May and early June.)
