Ultrasound/CT Scan Comparison in Abdomen Injury

P.A.S.S. – Pediatric Abdominal Sonogram Study

Protocol Description

Through this study, researchers will determine if an abdominal sonogram (ultrasound) can detect the presence of fluid or air in the abdomen of a child with an abdominal injury, so a CT scan (computed tomography) is not needed. A CT scan is a special x-ray that shows internal organs in greater detail than a standard x-ray. Like an x-ray, a CT scan involves exposure to a small amount of radiation. A sonogram may detect air or fluid but does not involve exposure to radiation. For participants, both scans will be done and the results will be compared.

Eligibility Criteria

Girls and boys between the ages of 1 month and 17 years, who are being evaluated for suspected abdominal trauma in the Emergency Department of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC will be eligible to participate in this study.
Boys: 1 month to 17 years
Girls: 1 month to 17 years

Requirements
During the injured child’s physical evaluation in the Emergency Department, a member of the trauma team will do an abdominal sonogram. This is a one-time procedure that is painless, takes two minutes or less, and will not change or delay the child’s treatment.
Visits: None beyond standard care for abdominal injury
