About the UTI Center

An Uncommon Approach to a Common Childhood Problem

The mission of the UTI Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is to provide evidence-based care, access to specialists and diagnostic testing, and the latest research findings to community clinical partners, parents, and researchers in order to improve the health and well being of children with urinary tract infection (UTI).

The UTI Center represents a unique interdisciplinary team of experts from the Divisions of General Academic Pediatrics, Urology, and Nephrology, and the Department of Radiology that specializes in the care of children with UTI. The UTI Center comprises physicians, leading researchers, radiologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, child life specialists, and diagnostic technicians working together in close collaboration with community clinical partners to provide the highest level of evidence-based care for children with UTIs.

Improving and Advancing Care for Children with UTI

Our clinicians and researchers have over two decades of experience taking care of children with UTIs, as evidenced by our published UTI studies dating back to 1993. The findings of our clinical research at the UTI Center have helped define national the American Academy of Pediatrics practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of children with UTIs.

Today, the UTI Center serves as a resource for families and clinical partners in the community for:

UTI – a bacterial infection of the bladder (cystitis) or kidney(s) (pyelonephritis
Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) – back flow of urine from the bladder toward the kidney
Bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) – a condition in which children hold onto urine and/or experience constipation, an important risk factor for UTI

Although UTI itself may be common, our approach to its care is exceptional.
