The specialties are: cancer; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology; heart and heart surgery; kidney; neonatology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopaedics; pulmonology; and urology. Children's Hospital ranked in all 10 of the pediatric specialties on the magazine's annual "Best Children's Hospitals" list.

Leapfrog

2010 Leapfrog Top Hospital

For the third straight year, Children's Hospital was named a 2010 Top Hospital by the Leapfrog Group, an independent patient safety organization. Children's is one of only seven pediatric hospitals in the nation named to this list. Results were based upon public comparison of hospitals on key issues including mortality rates for certain common procedures, infection rates, safety practices and measures of efficiency.

Electronic Medical Record

Children's leads the way in advanced technology, with several accomplishments based on our adoption of a fully integrated electronic medical record.

  • HIMSS 7
In 2009, Children's was recognized as the first pediatric hospital in this country to achieve Stage 7 recognition from HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) Analytics for achieving a virtually paperless patient record environment and the most comprehensive use of electronic medical records. Only 0.5 percent of more than 5,000 hospitals in the United States have achieved Stage 7 recognition. HIMSS studies have also shown correlations between the use of advanced technology and higher quality of patient care.
  • KLAS
In 2009, Children's was recognized by KLAS, an independent health care research organization, as the number one pediatric hospital in its use of health care information technology and electronic medical records.
  • CIO 100
In 2010, Children's was selected for a CIO 100 Award, which honors 100 companies that demonstrate excellence and achievement in IT based on innovative ways to deliver a competitive advantage and enable growth for their enterprise. Children's was selected for this honor based on the implementation of a fully integrated electronic medical record.
  • Articles
Children's was featured as the cover story in Healthcare Design, fall 2009 issue, and Healthcare Informatics, January and March 2010 issues.

NIH Funding

Children's has one of the fastest growing, National Institutes of Health-funded pediatric research programs in the country. Pediatric research programs at Children's Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine ranked eighth in number of grants from the NIH for fiscal year 2009.

Most Beautiful Hospital

After more than 10,000 votes, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was named one of America's most beautiful hospitals by Soliant Health, a leading specialty healthcare staffing provider and part of Adecco Group. Children's Hospital took the seventh spot and was named the most beautiful children's hospital on the list.
